Damast og mye lærdom - Damask and a Lot to Learn

Now it's been some time since I came back from a two week stay on the west coast of Norway. I was very lucky to get the chance to stay two weeks with Bjørg Hustad and her company Skyttel vev in order to learn about church textiles and damast weaving. Bjørg Hustad is one of two handweaving masters in Norway and she has managed to develop an impressive business, weaving fantastic table runners, pillows, table cloths, and church textiles. She also produces high quality fabric for folk costumes. Many of her products can be found on her homepage.

I learned a lot about damast weaving, and was allowed to weave some damast samples in looms both with harness and drawloom equipment. I'm very sorry, but I do not know if the English terms are correct. Anyway, with a harness, the weaver is able to pattern the fabric freely and without repetitions, see the flower above. I guess I'm going to make a sofa cushion from the fabric. I made drawings and was shown how to transfer the to square paper for weaving.
This sample was made in a drawloom, with the heddles arranged in a vertically mirrored way, and pattern only in narrow stripes.
The next two samples were made in a drawloom where heddles were placed over the whole width of the fabric. The first sample was thought to show birds on a telephone wire, but the proportions are not quite right. The second sample is the beginning of the Beatles song "All you need is love".

Bjørg Hustad's company Skyttel vev is located in Bud, a lovely fishing village. Unfortunately my camera went to pieces before I had the chance to take a single photo, and this was really bad luck. Bud is a place with a lovely harbor and many old, beautiful houses. Bjørg Hustad sells her products in the local art gallery, gallery Båken, owned by her and Åse Sæterøy, who paints beautiful aquarell paintings of the very special coastal landscape. I am deeply thankful to Bjørg for unforgettable and very valuable two weeks!

  3. Wow, just stunning. I can only imagine how complicated all that equipment is. I love the birds on the line BTW, I have pillows with birds like that in a printed cotton.
Sounds like a wonderful and jam packed experience.

  4. I love the flower with the color gradations behind it! I thought I'd do some research on drawlooms as I know nothing about them and their capabilities. It sounds like you had a wonderful time!

  5. Your damask is beautiful. What kind of drawlooms were you working on? Wonderful to have two whole weeks to weave intensely.

  6. Beautiful images and thank you for the commentary. The fabrics are spectacular.

I'm sorry your camera wasn't available to take pictures of the West Coast of Norway which is very beautiful. I've sailed the coast many times from Oslo all the way up to Honningsvåg. It is one of the most beautiful parts of the world.

    Very best,
    Lois

  7. I'm so impressed with your ability to sit at a new loom and produce such lovely weaving! Way to go!
I really love the Beatles song weave, I'd never have thought to do something like that, how creative!

  8. How fabulous, Charlotte! I've been interested in damask since before I learned to weave, and have thought about it often since learning that I could convert my Glimakra to becoming a drawloom. I've found your post really inspiring.

And I'm pleased you enjoyed yourself!

  9. That's great that you got to spend 2 weeks on a weaving adventure!!

Damask is so fascinating!! You did beautiful work. Very impressive! I've been following another blogger who's setting up a drawloom, and it seems baffling to me. Glad you could make sense of it all!

Too bad about your camera. I would have loved to see those pictures since I frequently hear that the NH coast is reminiscent of the Norwegian coast.

  10. What a wonderful opportunity for you and all the better that you can appreciate those weave structures - it's a reach for me. I was on retreat in Virginia City, Nevada with instructor Judith MacKenzie who took us through the vestments on display at the historic Catholic Church. She explained the intricate weave structures - you would have loved seeing these beautiful robes worn by parish priests in the Wild Wild West.

  11. Thanks so much everybody!
Evelyn - I wove on Swedish drawlooms called Oxabäck, some were only drawlooms, others had a harness or were combined drawlooms with harness.
Lynnette - I got a lot of help from a very good tutor!
Lois - then you must have been in the town where I live, Tromsø!
Sharon - yes, it sure would be great to see those robes!

  12. Nothing to do with your post....just popping in to answer your question about the raccoons in my front yard.

They are not tame or safe to pick up. The adults would scratch, fight and bite, and can sometimes have rabies.

While we were taking photos, the raccoons were just calmly watching us. Jim was up on a ladder with a light and a telephoto lens, and I zoomed the pictures in so people could see better. If we'd gotten closer, I would have been afraid of the raccoons.

They will run away from dogs though. They're not very aggressive, and only catch small animals like crayfish and frogs in the wild.

Sorry that was so long and in English!
