I had been fascinated by the rock art in Alta for many years, although I had never visited the museum, but this July I finally got there to see it myself! It was a extraordinarily hot day in Northern Norway, 28 degrees Celsius. The rock art in Alta is the largest collection of cliff drawings i northern Europe, encompasses between 1500 - 2000 single "drawings", and is listed on UNESCOs world heritage list.

The rock art dates back to the stone age and was probably made between 4500 and 500 BC. It is chiselled in cliffs at Hjemmeluft, meaning "Home air" i English. A very strange name for a place! The Sami name of the place is Jiepmaluokta, meaning "Bay with seals". The Norwegians of course didn't understand the Sami word and just picked similar sounding words as a translation.

The stone age people hunted, fished, gathered berries, roots and wild plants. They were semi-nomadic, meaning that they moved between several habitations in correspondence with the migration pattern of the game and the shifting seasons. The climate back then was warmer than it is now, and the cliffs were at sea level.

The stone art motives depict many different animals like reindeer, moose, bear, fish and small whales. There are a lot of drawings of humans, boats, hunting and fishing scenes, and some ornaments.
(Kilde: "Helleristninger", Arvid Sveen, 1996).
No one knows why the stone age people used many, many hours duirng millenia to chisel these elaborate drawings into solid rock. It is suposed that the rock art was important for group identity, hunting magic, rituals, religious beliefs and spiritualism. It might tell about the cosmology of the stone age people and the relationship between humans, animals and spirits. (Source: "Helleristninger", Arvid Sveen, 1996).

Some years ago I handknitted another sweater with rock art motives, this time in size nine years. I chose a moose calf, a reindeer and a hunter in a boat to embroider on the knitted fabric.

SvarSlettGreat post!! I love both of the sweaters you've made. They are a great combination of beauty and meaning - combining good design and very intriguing rock art.
SvarSlettI'm glad that you were able to visit the site of the Rock Art. Thanks for sharing your pictures of it.
It's amazing to me that people tend to ornament themselves and the area around them - whether through what they wear or through creating rock art. I find that drive to be fascinating. I often mistakenly think of the creative urge as something modern or something frivolous, but when I see something created long ago, it reminds me that the urge to create is part of being human.
For some reason, I find it very interesting that there are rock art pictures depicting skis. I'm surprised that skis were used long ago - but of course I shouldn't be. Skis are very practical in snow.

I have always been facinated with the rock art. We have a great deal of it out west. I'm amazed how long it lasts and what stories they may tell. Thanks for sharing what's near you - and what a great idea to put them into sweaters!
SvarSlettVery very interesting post. As Jennifer said we have a fair amount of rock art in the western part of the USA. I suspect there may have been more all over the country but the climate and materials may have dictated how long it lasted in each place.
SvarSlettAnd I believe France has some amazing rock art/paintings of horses. I can't put my mind on the details but I sure would know it when I saw it. Here, I went and checked, some information on the paintings.

Beautiful sweaters and I am not surprised they were worn and much loved for so many reasons.
Hei!

Tusen takk for kommentar i bloggen min!
I love to learn things about early man. Thanks so much for taking the time to take these pictures and sharing them with us.
SvarSlettLove your sweater!!!

Hei!
