Nytt prosjekt: store ullsjal - The new Project: Woolen Shawls

I have cut down the Spanish lace shawls, and I will have to spend many hours, probably in front of the TV, twisting the fringes. So now I have started on my next project: large shawls in worsted yarn. Our little vacation in the North of our county made the decision about colors easy: it just had to be the colors of the sea on a sunny day.

The binding pattern is a kind of lace, I don't know its name in English. I had to do two sample warps in order to find yarn with the right diameter and to decide epi and ppi. This little piece of fabric had a lightness and softness I was satisfied with.
The selvedge binding is plain weave, and this means that the selvedge ends will be woven in faster than the lace ends. Beacuse I have only one yarnbeam of my loom, I hanged the selvedge warp separately with weights. Because we adopted a kitten from the animal protection society some weeks ago, I didn't dare to hang the selvedge warp in spools at the back of the loom as I used to previously, it would have been a very tempting cat toy! Here he's hiding under my taquete rag rug.

In a blog from overseas (I am sorry, but I can't recall whose blog it was) I had a seen a while ago that a smart way to store extra threads behind the loom was to use put the threads into empty film canisters. I don't have film canisters anymore, and I had quite a lot of extra warp, so I just took other boxes with tight caps. As extra weight inside the boxes I use some of my kids magnestic toy building elements, they are small and heavy, and it worked out very well.

So now I can just weave on and I hope that the big shawl fabric will behave the same way after cutting down and steam pressing as the small sample piece did.

  3. I love the blue shades also - reminds me of not only sea, but sky. Definitely calming. Glad to see see that you adopted the kitten. What fun!

  4. Oh those shawls will be beautiful! The colors are absolutely perfect and
I like how you've planned them out on the warp. I think it's Susan over at Thrums that uses film roll canisters. I use little pouches with zippers or ties and put a bobbin for used for intarsia knitting in the pouch. Unwind what I need off the bobbin, tuck it in the pouch with weights and zip it mostly closed and let it hang.
What a beautiful kitten, he looks like he was made for mischief! His name???

  5. Hej Charlotte!

  6. As soon as I opened up your post and saw the beautiful blue yarn, I knew I'd love whatever project you'd make out of it!!

I love the pattern and design that you've chosen. I don't know my lace weaves - having only woven 1 set of huck towels - so I don't know what that weave structure is called that you're using. I'm not even sure it's not huck. Hopefully, some one with more lace knowledge will chime in!!

That kitten is so cute!!! (And I don't compliment cats lightly....being a dog-lover at heart!)

Great idea on using containers other than film canisters....since film barely exists any more. Now I'm thinking about what's in my cupboards!!

  11. I can't wait to see the shawl when it's done. The various blues are going to be stunning. What blue are you using for the weft? It just looks lovely on the loom already. You really are a very busy and interesting weaver to follow.

  12. Thank you all for for your very encouraging comments!
Theresa: using little pouches with zippers is really a terrific idea, thank you for the tip! The kitten's name is Sirius, and he has a surprisingly calm nature.
Lynnette: In the first three shawls (I plan to weave five) I am going to use the same colors as in the weft, but in different order for each shawl. I will cut down after shawl three and find out what to do with the last two shawls.

  14. That lace is called canvas weave in English (or all over huck lace) Embroiderers call it aida cloth.
The shades of blue are lovely!

Yes, film canisters are handy but even prescription bottles will work. We seem to be able to invent a cure for what ever we need to fix..

I enjoy your blog very much....

  15. Your shawls look like they will turn out beautifully. I too am learning the trials and tribulations of weaving with a new kitten in the house. Mostly he finds a ball of yarn I am ready to use and hides it somewhere in the house.

  16. For noen flotte farver.
