After the school's textile exhibition the whole family went to Stockholm for a couple of days. Among other attractions we also visited the Nordic Museum, a great and beautiful stone building which rooms many different exhibits. We looked at the wonderful folk art and Sami craft exhibits (the Sami are a reindeer-herding peaople indigenous to Northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia), but the exhibition "Fair Fashion" made greatest impression on us, also on the teenager.
The exhibition showed facts about the textile and shoe industry, and several films about workers conditions. Here are some om the facts, which deeply shocked me:
- In Sweden incredible 23 kg of textiles are comsumated per person each year
- The textile workers (often women) work up to 80 hours a week, the wages are extremely low, and they are not allowed to organize themsleves.
- Every year appx. 22'000 people are killed by pesticides from the cotton industry. About three million people are poisoned by the same pesticides and get symptomes like rashes, nausea, dizziness and vomiting.
- Cotton is grown on 2.5 % of the worlds arable soil! 25 % of the world's pesticide production is used on cotton, which makes cotton the most toxic crop on the planet.
- Between 10'00 and 30'000 litres of water are necessary to produce one kilogram of cotton. The pillar on the photo contains 5114 half litre bottles, which is just enough to produce 100 g of cotton, equivalent to a t-shirt for the eight year old boy standing in front.
This is the coolest bicycle I have ever seen! We came upon it on our Stockholm trip, and it was almost totally covered with lovely and colorful knitting and crocheting. Yesterday evening I zoomed in on the board hanging on the bicycle, and after some googling, I found this exciting blog. It turned out that a total of seven "knitted" bicycles had been placed around Stockholm, and that the grafitti-knitters behind the blog "knit in" almost everything!

Haha, dritkult! Strikkesykkel liksom.
SvarSlettOK, I'm definately going to rethink my cotton usage - the stats were shocking! It's quite amazing that we consume without thought of how the product got to us, how sad.
SvarSlettOn the other hand the bicycle is fantastic and hopefully knitted out of wool!

Kram Birgitta
Those were eye-opening textile facts. I've been knitting a toy out of acryllic, and everytime I touch the yarn I think it seems kind of toxic. But I associate cotton with naturalness and goodness. Hmmmm. Time to re-think that!
SvarSlettThe knitted bike covers (and chair covers and table leg covers) are really fun! The area where the bike was photographed reminds me a little bit of St. Petersburg, Russia somehow.
